How To Grow On Youtube
How to improve / grow your Gaming YouTube Channel:
Here are some of the answers I most frequently give.
1. Record in High Definition using something like a Hauppauge HDPVR or a Black Magic Recorder. (Google them)
2. Professionally brand your channel and reflect this as some sort of intro or splash screen on your videos and on your avatar and channel/twitter background.
3. Open a twitter account and start to network with gamers who are likeminded. This is very useful for ongoing feedback and they will help you to spread your video content via retweets etc.
4. Always stay away from copywritten music or video on your channel - (this is important because you will never be partnered if you breach copywrite)
Sources for copywritten music include: Jamendo.com, Freemusicarchive, incompetech. Check out http://creativecommons.org/ for more info. or better still - ask written permissionfrom the musician themselves. Many people are looking for exposure on youtube. If your videos are high quality - I will be possible to contact musicians and they may allow you to use their music if you ask nicely.
5. Be courteous and positive with your audience - including your haters - If you can turn your haters into fans then your doing it right.
6. Ask your audience for feedback. - alot.
7. Use a title / description and tags that are relevant. This is more important than you would think.
8. Do not tag your vids with other people's names - it will only offend them.
9. Don't ask people to record for you/ feature you on their channel or to do a dual comm unless you are of equivalent size - otherwise doing those things wont be useful to the other director.
10. Do cross promote with other small channels but don't use use the phrase 'box for box' all the time.
11. Don't spam other people's comments feeds or pages with your links. This gets you a bad reputation.
12. Do visit gaming forums and post your links in threads that find that acceptable - be sure to make other posts in other threads so you are not just considered a spammer.
13. Be active on other people's comments etc and they will often reciprocate.
14. Use the machinima 'respawn army' App on facebook @ www.respawnarmy.com - this is the tool that Machinima uses to recruit now. so play ball and get noticed.
15. Look for opportunities to be on bigger channels:
This doesn't mean ask everyone to do a dual tage or comm but instead wait for opportunities to appear on their channels naturally. In competition entries / top 5's / trickshot challenges / guest footage for their commentaries etc.
Everyone of my appearances on a bigger channel has increased my subs and been a response to something named above such as a comp or request for submissions.
I do not suggest you ask everyone for a dualtage as your attempt to garner their subs will merely alienate them if you offer nothing in return.
16. Have fun. this will come over to your viewers and they will like it if you do.
I have one rule. If it does it for me then it will have an audience somewhere.
17. Don't alientate your audience with hate, racisim, console bias or downright trolling. Unless thats your gig.
18. Release videos on a schedule: I do not do this as I cannot maintain a schedule. The moment i feel I 'have' to make videos for a certain day. I can't. However this is a teqnique that will increase your views as your subs will start to 'tune in' on that specific day to watch your new video...so if you can, then do.
19. Start a series. This is a tip from Drift0r. People like series and they are more likely to subscribe. so find something you can do repeatedly and do it. This could be a top 5, a commentary style or just a style of tutorial. Be creative. this is where you can have the most fun.
This is the most important thing
20. Be original. There are too many gaming channels on youtube. many of which are bad and many of which steal content ideas from each other. So be original and you might get lucky enough to blow up before someone comes along and steals your concept.
