How we score.

We score games on a scale of 0 – 100 – an average game will therefore be awarded a 50 or a ‘5’ and we will always be fair. We do not pad scores for the purpose of good relations. Our honesty means you can count on us for an unbiased review.

Here are some benchmarks for our score system.

100. Genre Defining / Totally Groundbreaking / The best of the best. Only the pinnacle of gaming will get this score: games you'll talk about in twenty years.

Benchmark: Grand Theft Auto III / Goldeneye for N64 / StreetFighter II Snes / Cannon Fodder / Mario Kart

90+. Excellent game, impressive scores all-round, strong consideration for story, sound, environments, nothing has been neglected. Clearly superior and accessible gaming - highly commended.

Benchmark: Sonic the Hedgehog - Megadrive / Mafia / Zelda / Wii Sports / Unchartered 2 / Fallout III

80+. A very good game that may have a couple of disappointing features but is of an overall high quality. If you spent fifty quid on it you won't feel ripped off. - One of the very good games in its genre.

Benchmark: Killzone 2 / Fight Night Round 3 / Tiger Woods Golf / Grand Theft Auto IV / Dead Rising

70+. A good game, although not groundbreaking. Nice looking, fun to play, engaging, not going win anything from us, but will appeal to certain gamers.

Benchmark: Modern Warfare 2 (although won fanboy awards) / Operation Flashpoint / [Prototype]

60+. Could be a 5 but with some redeeming features. Mildly above average - verging on good.

Possibly poor but the 'does it have wings factor' may have raised the score. The limbo score

Benchmark: Crash Commandos / Army of Two / The Bourne Conspiracy / Need For Speed Shift / Pro Evo Soccer 10

50+. Average / okay / nothing groundbreaking / possibly seen it all before / enjoyable in parts but little impresses. THE AVERAGE GAME ...Meh

Benchmark: Saw / The Club / Fracture / Haze / Pain / Wet

40+. Sub Par with some redeemable features i.e. May be poor single player but handy online. Typically under average but not a total loss and possibly feels unfinished.

Benchmark: Wanted: Weapons Of Fate / Tony hawks Ride / Iron Man / Hawx / Harry Potter

30+. May suffer from: Sup Par AI / Boring or cliched storyline / Tears in graphics / Overpriced / Generally pants / Highly disappointing.

Benchmark: Lair / Kane & Lynch Dead Men / Conflict Denied Ops / G1 Jockey 4 / Bionic Commando / Facebreaker

20+. May suffer from: Inherently buggy / bad value game / poor game play / bad production / insulting to the player / shocking artificial intelligence / looks like shit.

Benchmark: Rogue Warrior / Leisure Suit Larry / Shellshock 2 Bloodtrails / History Channel: Battle for the Pacific / Anything about paintballing or ponies.

10+ A poor movie tie in with more effort on the packaging than the game - not worth playing for free / waste of life / sucks willpower to play / possibly damaging to intelligence.

Benchmark: Superman 64 / Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 / Charlie’s Angels / Bible Adventures

0+ May suffer from: Broken / unplayable due to glitches etc / worst game ever / reserved for the lowest of the low / possible doorstop or drinks coaster material. / Don’t have it in same room as you.

Benchmark: Big Rigs / ET. The Extra Terrestrial

What is "does it have wings"

The personal score by the reviewer that needs no explanation - could be judged on any of the following merits:

1) Reminds reviewer of childhood favourite TV show.

2) Has a hilarious moment that made you laugh for twenty minutes.

3) Maybe it’s better or worse than the aggregate suggests.

4) Features some sort of genius/abomination that deserves merit or discredit: EG: picking up hookers and killing them after sex in GTA (could be used to increase or decrease)

5) Personally I enjoyed it because of ________

6) Its terrible because __________

Equally a low “does it have wings” score can be a result of anything the reviewer deemed to be personally annoying / offensive / bad in some way

i.e. The Rogue Warrior Mickey Rourke rap at the end = shadiest moment in a game ever.
